The regulatory framework for building construction in Canada is mulit-levelled. In order to ensure that there is a reasonable degree of uniformity amongst the various jurisdictions, a system has been developed to facilitate communication and cooperation between the various government levels involved. Participants will be given a brief overview of this system and how it functions.

The latest generation of core model codes have been published in objective-based format. They are a mix of performance- and prescriptive-based requirements with explicitly stated objectives and functionality. Added to this is enhanced supplementary information in the form of intent and applications statements. Participants will be introduced to what objective-based codes are, why the Canadian Codes went the objective-based route and what the benefits are.
