Engineering Significance of the May 12, 2008 Wechuan Earthquake in China
A group of Canadian Structural and Geotechnical Engineers conducted Reconnaissance investigations in the earthquake stricken regions of the Sichuan Province of the Peoples Republic of China. The visit was organized by the Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering and
assisted by the Government of China.
The speakers will present their findings in terms of performance of Civil Engineering Infrastructure during the earthquake, and discuss lessons
learned from the disaster.
The quake, with a Richter Magnitude of 7.9, devastated the entire region, killing at least 69,185 people with 18,467 missing and presumed dead, as well as injuring 74,171. More than 45.5 million people in 10 provinces and regions were affected. At least 15 million people were evacuated from their homes and more than 5 million were left homeless.
