LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE FOR STRUCTURAL LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE, INTERNALLY CURED NORMAL WEIGHT CONCRETE AND GEOTECHNICAL FILL APPLICATIONS

Traditional uses of lightweight aggregate and structural lightweight concrete for bridge applications will be presented briefly. The main presentation will focus on an emerging technology, lightweight aggregate for internal curing of concrete. This is where saturated lightweight aggregate sand is substituted for a portion of the normal weight sand in a normal weight concrete mixture. The use of lightweight aggregate in geotechnical fill applications is growing exponentially as more structures are built on unstable ground. The major applications for lightweight fill will be presented at the end of the talk.
