Structural steel becoming architecture : case studies of aerhetics, form and efficency

Architects are exploring forms and aesthetics that were impossible to realize as little as fifteen years ago. Today almost anything appears possible.

This presentation will explore how many « impossible dreams » were conceptualized, designed, and built. Each of the ten projects discussed used structural steel’s high strength-to-weight ratio and its desirability for structural expression in a unique way.

From the swoopy curves of Frank Gehry’s Experience Music Project to the crisp angularity of the Rem Koolhaus Seattle Central Library to the daring cantilevered buildings of Museum Plaza by Joshua Prince-Ramus…architects are truly exploring the boundaries of the possible.

Each of these projects succeeded with a different set of engineering solutions ranging from advanced construction methodology to structural analysis techniques to seismic isolation. All provide a knowledge base for application to projects of the future.
