Design and Performance of Masonry Structures

The presentation will cover factors affecting the structural performance of masonry walls.  It will also include a summary of the changes in the latest masonry code.

Furthermore the presentation will include a brief review of the latest textbook in Masonry Design co-authored by M. Hatzinikolas and Y. Korany.

Factors affecting the performance of exterior masonry walls such as environmental separation, condensation and construction tolerances will also be presented.

The speaker will also introduce the latest Masonry Design Software developed by Dr. Nick Lehtola, Ph.D., P.Eng in cooperation with Dr. Hatzinikolas.

Michael Hatzinikolas
Michael Hatzinikolas ProfessorUniversity of Alberta

Dr. Hatzinikolas is an adjunct professor of the Civil Engineering program at the University of Alberta. He has prepared and published a large number of details for exterior wall assemblies from cavity and veneer walls to stucco and siding. He also has developed a computer program for designing load bearing masonry walls, masonry beams, slender walls and shear walls with openings. He is co-author of three textbooks in masonry design and has published over 120 research papers and technical manuals.

Michael Hatzinikolas served as Executive Director of the Canadian Masonry Research Institute (CMRI) for over 25 years.
